Commodore impresses with prototypes at IFA, really

septembre 4, 2008 · Filed Under Gadgets · Comment

While the idea of Commodore showing off some early prototype devices isn’t exactly the sort of thing that’d normally get many folks’ hopes up, the never-say-die company looks to have managed to impress the doubters at IFA, where it had a number of intriguing-looking concepts on hand in addition to that soon-to-be-released netbook we saw yesterday. That includes two Pocket PC devices — one with a sliding QWERTY keypad and one that opts for a folding design (pictured above) — as well as a much slicker-looking netbook than the one that is actually going to be released, naturally (check it out after the break). Of course, specs for any of those are virtually non-existent, although there’s apparently some talk that the Pocket PCs could sell for between €100 and €150 (or roughly $220 to $290) whenever they’re actually released. Be sure to hit up the gallery below for plenty more shots courtesy of Engadget Spanish.

Dell confirms Inspiron 910 netbook arriving this week

septembre 4, 2008 · Filed Under Gadgets · Comment

Filed under:

Dell’s Inspiron 910 / Mini Inspiron hasn’t exactly been asecret since we first heard about it back in April, but it sounds like this baby bump is about to go from open secret to bouncing bundle of joy — Dell just confirmed to InformationWeek that the netbook is scheduled to arrive later this week. That’s all we know right now — Dell reps called those earlier specs we’d heard “pretty much rumor and speculation” — but we’ll go out on a limb and say we wouldn’t expect anything less than an 8.9-inch screen and 1.6GHz Atom in there. Sorry if we killed the surprise, guys — but remember, you can still wow us with the price tag.

[Thanks, AC]

Hands-on with the Dell Inspiron Mini 9

septembre 4, 2008 · Filed Under Gadgets · Comment

We’ve known for some time that Dell was working on a Netbook-style laptop–the same kind of small, low-power, inexpensive system made popular by Asus and the Eee PC line. And even though there are not many surprises in the just-announced Inspiron Mini 9 (previous leaks revealed the system’s design and features), it’s still exciting to see a major player back the Netbook concept in a big way.

Component-wise, the Mini 9 is similar to other recent Netbooks, such as the Eee PC 901 and the Acer Aspire One, and includes Intel’s Atom CPU. But in typical Dell fashion, there are more customization options than we’ve seen in a Netbook before.

Our test unit arrived with 1GB of RAM, a 16GB solid-state hard drive, and Windows XP. That config costs $514 and comes very close to hitting the benchmarks we set out in our “Building the Perfect Netbook” feature, which asked for similar components, but maybe a slightly bigger SSD hard drive and an impulse-purchase $499 price tag.

How to record streaming audio

septembre 4, 2008 · Filed Under Gadgets · Comment

Many online music sites (such as Pandora) prefer to stream audio offerings rather than serving them up as downloadable files; this way, the sites deal with standard royalty fees rather than having to negotiate individual licenses for each track they offer. Although the legality is questionable, there are–and will always be–ways to record these streams. Ideally, this would be done on a high-speed connection to minimize skipping and ensure the highest possible sound quality. But no matter what connection speed you have, this tutorial will show you how to record streamed audio as an MP3.

Note: This tutorial was completed using Windows XP

Cost: Free

Time commitment: Varies

System Requirements: Windows

  1. Download and install Free Sound Recorder
  2. Open Free Sound Recorder and the streaming audio source
Streaming audio can be recorded from the Internet or a music jukebox such as Rhapsody. Make sure you close all other programs, and turn off any audio alerts you may have on your desktop. The software records from the sound card, so it will pick up anything you hear through your computer’s speakers or headphones.
  3. Only two open apps.

  4. Set the output file type
For the purposes of this tutorial, we will be recording in MP3, since it is fairly universal and also small enough to be transferred to portable devices, but the software also gives WAV and WMA as options if you prefer. Click the Settings button to get to the below menu.
  5. Click the General Settings tab, and select the MP3 file option. You may also designate where you want the file saved in the Output Directory field.

  6. Set the file bit rate
The quality and size of the file depends on the bit rate. The higher the bit rate, the better the audio will sound. The lower the bit rate, the smaller the file will be. We’re using the highest available bit rate for MP3–256kbps–which will result in a larger file that sounds better.
  7. Click the Output Format Settings tab, and drag the toggle to the desired bit rate.

  8. Set the inputs
Hit the device button to view the options (if they are not already visible). You will be recording stereo audio from the sound card.
  9. The top drop down allows you to select the sound source. Make sure it is set to your sound card. Under Recording Mixer, select Stereo Mix.

Raon Digital Everun Note, Dual-Core UMPC

septembre 4, 2008 · Filed Under Gadgets · Comment

Raon Digital Everun Note, Dual-Core UMPC

There are always bragging rights when you are the first to do something (intelligent). Dual-core Atom UMPCs might not be far away, the Raon might be the first dual-core ultra mobile PC (UMPC) to make it to the market, but we can never be sure in this industry as “paper launches” are extremely common. At close to $1000 with taxes and shipping, this is not cheap, but it is more powerful than similarely sized UMPCs (it needs 2GB of RAM, in my opinion). Here are the highlights of the Raon Digital Everun Note:

  • AMD Turion X2 dual-core CPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 12GB SSD or up to 80GB HDD
  • 7″ 1024×600 display, DX9 graphics
  • Wifi B/G
  • PCIe mini port
  • 748g, 200×118x27.5mm
  • $879
